Best Places to get a Philadelphia Cheesesteak

No visit to Philadelphia is complete without trying a Philadelphia Cheesesteak. It is one of the favourite foods of the city and has been around since the early 20th century.

A Cheesesteak is basically a sandwich made of thinly sliced pieces of beef in a long roll, topped with melted cheese.

It is widely believed that Pat and Harry Olivieri invented the Cheesesteak by serving chopped up steak in a roll at their hot dog stand near the Italian Market in the early 1930s. These steak sandwiches became so popular that Pat soon opened his own restaurant. This restaurant still exists today as Pat’s King of Steak on 9th Street and Passyunk Avenue.

Who first added cheese to the sandwich is unclear. But what is clear, is that it was Provolone cheese that originally topped the steak.

Pat’s biggest rival is Geno’s Steaks, located just across the street. Their rivalry is legendary and it has become a personal lifestyle statement at which place you choose to eat your Cheesesteak. Today every Philadelphian has their own favourite place to get its Cheesesteak and you can find different versions in all kinds of places - from fast food restaurants to high end gourmet temples.

Our staff at the hostel has of course its own favourite Cheesesteak restaurant and is happy to share it with you.

We recommend South Street as the place to go. Try a Cheesesteak at Jim’s on South and 4th or SOS (Steaks on South) on South and 3rd.
